On 2 and 3 October, Ocean Winds, majority shareholder of WindFloat Atlantic, took part in the Portuguese Renewable Energy Summit 2025 (PRES2025), organised by APREN – Associação Portuguesa de Energias Renováveis. The event brought together key players from the renewable energy sector to discuss Portugal’s path towards a more sustainable future.
Representing OW, José Pinheiro, Country Manager for Iberia, joined the panel “Key milestones for offshore wind in Portugal to achieve 2 GW of installed capacity.” sharing insights from Ocean Winds’ experience with WindFloat Atlantic – the country’s only operating offshore wind farm.
José Pinheiro highlighted that offshore wind represents a unique opportunity for industrial growth in Portugal. However, he also noted that taking timely action to launch commercial-scale projects will be key to ensuring the country develops its own capabilities rather than depending on external suppliers once the technology reaches full maturity.
Therefore, the panel underlined that offshore wind brings much more than clean energy: it can attract investment, create jobs, and boost local innovation and expertise.
Speakers agreed on the need for a stable regulatory framework, faster permitting, and close collaboration between the industry and public institutions to speed up offshore wind deployment and support Portugal’s net-zero goals.
